Created to provide meaningful housing to homeless families throughout the East Bay, the Alameda Point Collaborative transformed vacant housing at a decommissioned Naval Air Station into a supportive housing community serving over 500 residents.
APC has given birth to several community-based projects. Among them, the Growing Youth Project (GYP), sparked by a community food assessment in 2006, employs resident youth working to build a sustainable food system here on Alameda Point. Growing Youth operates a community garden, weekly produce delivery and teaches residents about cooking and nutrition.
In 2003, APC created Ploughshares Nursery, a commercial nursery specializing in native, drought-tolerant plants. Ploughshares operates a resident job training program and its proceeds support housing and services at APC.
In 2006, APC founded Cycles of Change APC, a nonprofit community bike shop that recycles donated bikes and sells them to the public. Cycles also hosts field trips, a resident job training program and bike maintenance classes.
