About our Shop
Cycles of Change APC is a community bicycle shop which opened
in July 2006. It is a collaboration between Cycles of Change,
a 10 year old East Bay youth bike education program, and Alameda
Point Collaborative (APC), a non-profit which manages housing
and services for a 200 unit residential community comprised
of 500 formerly homeless adults and families.
We are working together to operate a sustainable
bicycle center which is a place for bicycles and people to
come together in order to help strengthen the community of
the East Bay. The shop’s mission is to enhance lives
by providing high quality recycled bicycle services in a vibrant
and open community space.

Services
The shop offers the following services:
- Earn a bike program: Youth and adults are able to volunteer
in exchange for credits which are used to earn bikes and
parts.
- Used bicycle sales: Expert mechanics refurbish and sell
bikes that have been donated in order to support the project.
- Bicycle donation center: Please see DONATIONS below.
- DIY repair shop and mechanics classes: There are 6 bike
stands and a full range of bicycle tools that can be used
in the shop by visitors to assist in their repairs. Staff
also are there to help others learn the repair themselves.
- Adult job training, youth internships, and volunteer
opportunities: We are a site where adult APC residents are
employed and receive job training in how to operate all
aspects of the bike shop! We also offer unpaid youth internships
and opportunities for volunteers to come and put their skills
to work for a great cause.
- A safe, open and constructive community space for all:
The bike shop is a wonderful place to be for people of all
backgrounds and bike needs. Please come by for a visit!
Donations
Cycles of Change APC serves as a place where you can donate/recycle
your old bikes and parts. In fact, every bike that we have
has been donated by someone like you! We are especially in
need of useable bikes that can be earned by one of our youth
or adult volunteers, or resold to support our operating expenses.
Donations can be dropped off whenever the shop is open. Just
bring them into the shop. If you would like to donate when
the shop is closed, you can bring donations to the APC offices
across the street from the shop at 677 W. Ranger Avenue, M-F
10-5pm.
All donations are tax-deductible. Ask for a donation receipt
at the time of donating.
Please DO NOT LEAVE DONATIONS anywhere around the shop or
around APC. Check all donations in with an APC staff person.
Thanks!
Volunteering
The Cycles of Change Community Bike Shop needs volunteers
to help refurbish bikes and contribute to the success of this
amazing project.
We are in need of volunteers who have the skills to:
- Repair donated bikes for sales, library bike, bicycle
field trips and earn-a-bike programs
- Build bike storage racks out of recycled bike frame metal
or salvaged wood.
- Transform the shop from pretty cool bike shop in a warehouse
to a community bike shop dream palace by helping to organize
parts and contribute to the design and beautification of
the shop.
- Manage our online bicycle sales program by taking digital
photos of bikes and posting to our website.
- Install overhead florescent lights in the warehouse to
light the entryway
- Spread the word to everyone you can! Write a story in
a newspaper or magazine, talk to local schools, churches
and other organizations, hang fliers, build new partnerships,
etc...
- Help develop fundraising ideas for the project!
Please get in touch with us and let us know what types of
projects or skills you are able to contribute. Once you get
in touch with us we will get you our volunteer application
packet and get you started on a great volunteer experience!
Location
We are located in Alameda in the middle of a large warehouse
on Alameda Point (west Alameda, former Naval Base). We are
across the street from the APC offices at 677 W. Ranger Avenue.
You can easily spot the shop by the 40-50 wheels that are
hanging on the fence outside the entrance. To find the shop,
go through the big wooden "barn" attached to the
warehouse and into the middle of the warehouse.
